Makin’ it better

I’M NOT REALLY SURE we can think of ourselves as news designers without having a strong respect and love for typography. After, all, type is about 80 percent of what we do!

So when I come across a little piece of fun-typography-in-motion, part of the fun is sharing it with you!

PBS short on typography

TOO MANY PEOPLE who design newspaper pages know nothing (really…nothing!) about typography. That’s like a surgeon with no knowledge of anatomy.

This piece from PBS is no primer, but it does offer a sense of why typography is important.

Take a look.

More to come.

Video: Improving cover design

AT NEWSPAPERS, we really don’t do cover pages, do we? Or…do we?

How about that football tab?

Or the special advertising section for Memorial Day?

Or that feature front on New Year’s Day?

OK…yes…we do cover design.

So, here’s a piece—using the front of a photo magazine—on how you can do it better.

I like the way this video breaks down the steps in the process. And one of the things it stresses has long been a principle I teach others: You create a better design by what you take away…not what you add.

Watch. Learn. Enjoy.

Just for laughs: The first help desk

WE NEWSPAPERFOLK are often so caught up in our work that we forget to relax and enjoy a laugh. This post is here to bring you a chuckle.

I can’t remember where I first saw this video but it has become one of my favorites. It’s in Norwegian, with subtitles.

If any of you have been around long enough (there may not be that many of us left!) to remember the time that computers first came into the newsroom, this will take you back. I’m willing to bet that, like me, you can put a name and a face to the person who is getting the help here.

So, enjoy. And if this brings a newsroom tale or two to mind, well…please share that with the rest of us.
