More 9.11 tributes

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE to my request for your 9.11 pages. All of the pages follow. Some of you included notes, and they accompany the pages you sent. Others are labeled at the top of each page or group of pages. At the end, you’ll links to other 9.11 pages. Thanks again for being a part of this.

THE BEACON

FROM MARC STUMBO

Hi Ed,

I have attached two PDFs from our 9/11 anniversary issue. The original is my first design based on an open letter from our bishop to the diocesan faithful. I chose to only use color on the photo and get rid of the ears, bottom teasers and index. Everyone here liked it, but at the last minute the bishop decided to run the pg. 1 piece as his weekly column, and our editor chose to add ears to the top, so the final design became much more pedestrian.

I shot the photo on the 2nd anniversary of 9/11 on 4×5 transparency film, so I had plenty of pixel depth in my scan to get the tight crop, which is only a small portion of the original. (For anyone interested, the view is from the pier at Liberty State Park in Jersey City.) We continued inside with seven pages of 10th anniversary coverage, including a page commemorating the life of Father Mychal Judge, who was a priest from our diocese and the first certified fatality of the attacks.

FROM BILL DiNOME:

Mr. Henninger,
Your call for tributes spurs me to offer the attached list of links to student newspapers that commemorated the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Perhaps you’ll see some things here worthy of comment. I know my fellow college-media advisers are proud of their students who produced them.
My condolences on the loss of your cousin 10 years ago.

Best wishes,

And here’s a very special publication worth looking at, published by the Associated Collegiate Press:

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the terrorism attacks of Sept. 11, 2011, the Associated Collegiate Press is making available a PDF file of its book, “9-11: The College Press Responds.” <http://acp.studentpress.org/pdf/acp9-11book.pdf> .” The book was published in Spring 2002 and includes a wide range of examples of how college newspapers covered the story.
A very limited number of printed copies of this book from the original press run are available for $15 at the studentpress.org online store. <http://studentpress.org/pubs.php>
