FROM THE FOLKS at www.fromupnorth.com, some examples of innovative typographic thinking. Not the stuff you’re gonna use on the front of a weekly newspaper…or…would ya?

AT NEWSPAPERS, we really don’t do cover pages, do we? Or…do we?
How about that football tab?
Or the special advertising section for Memorial Day?
Or that feature front on New Year’s Day?
OK…yes…we do cover design.
So, here’s a piece—using the front of a photo magazine—on how you can do it better.
I like the way this video breaks down the steps in the process. And one of the things it stresses has long been a principle I teach others: You create a better design by what you take away…not what you add.
Watch. Learn. Enjoy.
KRISTIN COKER’S COVER last week drew other high school football section submissions. Notes, pages and comments from Ed follow.
FROM JULIE HOLCOMBE | GREER CITIZEN:
Since the season is here and we noticed Kristin’s awesome cover I thought I would send along a few sample pages from our 2010 football preview for comment. The whole section was truly a team effort that we were all really proud of.
FROM ED: I love the whole idea here! It’s different and it’s very attention-getting and it’s really very nicely designed. When I redesigned The Greer Citizen a few years ago, I expected good things. But this is…well, it kinda knocks my socks off! Everything here, down to the torn notebook paper and the coffee cup ring, is just so cool. This made my day when I first looked at it…and I’m excited all over again looking at it now.
FROM ED: Good job of taking what could have been just another routine inside page of a football tab and giving it some real visual interest. It’s clean, it’s attractive and it’s readable. More than that, it matches the entire “confidential file” theme of the section.
FROM ED: I wish I could run this larger on the blog page…this is a super job on a tab centerspread! One small nit: I would avoid primary colors in the charts. The yellow is very aggressive and may draw too much attention to itself.
Overall, I’m deeee-lighted with what I’m seeing here! This took a lot of planning and it’s great to see good planning become a great section. Excellent work, all!
FROM TERESA PULLIUM | CHEROKEE SCOUT:
I was looking at the college football cover you featured on your blog. Here is another I’d like to get your thoughts on. We only have four high school teams in the area. Not quite as big as college.
Teresa Pullium | Design Director
1. Glad you worked on getting the football field background. And I like the bench because it adds the “football feel.” Much better than just an empty patch of grass.
2. Having the bench, however, kinda makes the players seem a bit too small in comparison. Perhaps the bench should have been smaller.
3. Good use of typography in the title, especially getting the two words to align left and right.
A good effort, but tiny player pix are a problem.
So…everyone…what are your thoughts? Like? Don’t like? Suggestions for improvement? Have at it!
