FROM MILTON, MA, near Boston, comes this front page from the Milton Times, submitted by the boss, Publisher Patricia Desmond. Patricia’s brief note follows. Below the page, some comments from Ed.
“The attached page was laid out by William Curry, designer for the Milton Times, a tabloid size weekly newspaper in Milton, MA.”
FROM ED: Some quick points…then I’m hoping others will add their comments.
1. The look is dated. Especially the teasers and the (very large) nameplate.
2. I’d find somewhere else to place the UPC code. Top left corner is using prime space for an element that brings nothing to the reader.
3. We need more spacing between packages.
4. Red box around the photos at top and the blue tint behind the package at bottom left add to the dated feel.
In all, the Milton Times really needs a new look.
So…what do you think? Am I being too severe? What changes would you suggest?
