FOLKS AT THE HERALD, here in Rock Hill SC, had a cool idea. They wanted to run a photo of the U.S. flag on July 4th. Had it all ready to go and…a fire at an old, abandoned bleachery just off downtown Rock Hill—real, breaking news—got in the way. Imagine that: Putting away an idea because a breaking story needs to take precedence. What a radical concept!
But the editors didn’t toss out the flag idea. Instead, they followed up a few days later, printing a U.S. flag as a section wrap and running the other contenders in a reader contest inside.
I like it! Good example of rolling with the punches—and remembering that news comes first. Oh…and the flag wrap was pretty impressive, too!
What are your thoughts?
